Check Calculations Explained

Check Calculations help validate the nutrition data entered for an Ingredient or Recipe by comparing calculated nutrient values against the values entered in Genesis Foods.

These calculations are designed to identify:

  • Missing nutrient data
  • Nutrient totals that do not align mathematically
  • Potential data entry issues
  • Inconsistencies between nutrient components and totals

Genesis Foods performs these checks automatically and displays the percentage difference between the entered value and the estimated value calculated from related nutrients.

A small difference is expected in some cases due to:

  • Rounding
  • Supplier-provided data
  • Laboratory analysis methods
  • Regulatory calculation standards

Large differences may indicate that nutrient values should be reviewed.

Available Check Calculations

Genesis Foods currently performs validation checks for:

  • Calories
  • Fat
  • Sugars
  • Protein
  • Weight

Each section below explains how the estimated values are calculated and how percentage differences are determined.

Calories

4-4-9-7

  • This is the default formula in Genesis Foods.
  • ([Protein value] x 4) + ([Carbohydrate value] x 4) + ([Fat value] x 9) + ([Alcohol value] x 7) = Estimated Calorie value

4-4-9-2-7

  • ([Protein value] x 4) + ([Carbohydrates - Total Dietary Fiber] x 4) + ([Fat value] x 9) + ([Total Dietary Fiber value] x 2) + ([Alcohol value] x 7) = Estimated Calorie value

Fat

  • Genesis sums the 4 fat components:
    • Saturated
    • Monounsaturated
    • Polyunsaturated
    • Trans
  • The sum is compared against the Total Fat value entered.

Sugars

  • Genesis subtracts Added Sugar from Total Sugar.
  • If Added Sugar > Total Sugar, Genesis will alert the user.

Protein

  • Genesis sums all Amino Acids and subtracts that value from the Protein value entered.
  • If the Amino Acids > Protein, Genesis will alert the user.

Weight

  • Genesis sums the basic proximates: Protein, Carbohydrates, Fat, Alcohol, Water, and Ash
  • The sum is compared against the Ingredient weight or the Recipe serving size.

Calculating the % Difference

[(Estimated - Entered) / Entered] x 100 = % difference
