Create a Label

A label in Genesis Foods is a nutrition facts panel and associated compliance information generated from an approved recipe's formulation data.

It's the digital representation of what you'd see on a physical food product's packaging — the Nutrition Facts panel, ingredient statement, and allergen declarations. Genesis Foods auto-generates these based on the recipe's ingredients, amounts, and nutrient calculations, ensuring regulatory compliance.

Prerequisites

You need an approved recipe before you can create a label. Labels are generated from recipe data.

You can start either in the Recipe itself or from the Genesis Foods Dashboard.

  1. From a Recipe, navigate to the Labels section. Choose the Authority and click Create Label.

    OR

From the Dashboard, click the New Label button.

  2. Enter the Setup Details for the Label by typing in the Label Name and choosing the Authority, Regulation Year, and Recommendation Profile from the drop-down menus.

  3. Click on the type of Label Format you want, and then click Continue to Create Label at the bottom of the page.
  4. From here, you will click Select Recipe. Note: If you started from the Recipe screen, the Recipe will automatically populate and you will skip to step 6.
  5. Type in the name of the Recipe into the Search Bar and select the Recipe to be displayed on the Label. Click Apply & Next.

Note: You will then move to the main Label screen where you can work through all of the customization options.

  6. Click Select Options underneath Display Options to format your Label by selecting Language options, Full or Simplified template style and Decimal options. Note: A simplified template is only available if 6 or more of the calories and core nutrients are 0.

  7. Click Edit Options or Needs Attention underneath Serving Options to add Household Serving Size and Servings per container.

Household serving size can be a combination of letters and numbers (i.e. 1 cup).  Servings per container can also be a combination of letters and numbers (i.e., 1 or about 4).
  8. Under Mandatory Nutrients, click Select Options to determine how these are calculated or displayed. From the initial popup screen, you can search for the Nutrient, scroll or expand to see your options.

At the top, you can choose to use unrounded values to calculate the %Daily Value. Genesis defaults to using label rounded values.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Missing ingredient nutrition data → causes label errors

  • Incorrect units (e.g., using "each" instead of grams)

  • Forgetting allergens in ingredient setup

  • Recipe serving size mismatch with label serving size
