Before getting started, gather the information needed to build the Ingredient, such as a spec sheet, certificate of analysis, or other documentation that includes the nutrition breakdown.
Note: Verify nutrition accuracy. Use reliable sources, like supplier information, government databases, lab analysis, research information. It is also important to account for the processes that your product goes through, such as moisture loss, vitamin or mineral adjustments if needed, fermentation, etc.
Create an Ingredient
- On the Dashboard, click New Ingredient.
- Type the name of the Ingredient in the Name text field using the established naming best practices agreed on by your organization. The Name entry can accommodate letters and numbers.
- Add Aliases (optional) by typing into the text field below name. Aliases will be used in the Ingredient Statement and on reports. Aliases are helpful when the Ingredient Name is more technical to provide an alternate name or for an Ingredient name to be used in a second language.
- Add Tags (optional) for the Ingredient by entering search terms by typing on top of Search for a tag, and clicking on the name to add them to the Ingredient.
- Add the Product or Supplier field (optional) by searching for the Product or Supplier and clicking on the name in the dropdown menu to add it to the Ingredient.
- Type in the Weight and select the Unit type from the dropdown menu based on the spec sheet, certificate of analysis or other ingredient nutrient documentation. Add Volume and Unit Conversions if applicable.

Populate the Nutrients by selecting a choice from the dropdown menu. Label – U.S. 2016 Mandatory lists the 15 nutrients required on a U.S. Nutrition Facts Label. Choose the appropriate % Reference Value for a Specific Authority or Adult or Child for USA.

Enter the values for each Nutrient based on your spec sheet by clicking in the value column next to the nutrient. A yellow alert Triangle will appear until all required Nutrients are entered.

View and copy Ingredient Statements or Add Sub-Ingredients in the Packaging options. Rotate through tabs to see Ingredient Statement for each Authority.

Adjust the Allergens by dragging and dropping each common allergen or using the arrows. Once complete, select the Verify that your allergens are correct button.

Add Attribute (optional) and supporting information.

Add any Notes, Images, Files, Custom Fields or Cost (optional) to your Ingredient in the Documentation Section.
- Click Approve Ingredient at the top left to finalize your Ingredient.
- The Finalized Ingredient will now be V1 (read only).
- Once an Ingredient is finalized, users cannot edit the Approved Version. If Create New Version to Edit is selected, Genesis Foods will create a new editable version, called V2 Draft. For more information on Versioning, see this article.
